Overview:

Abstract: The present work addresses the scientific treatment of a block excavation unearthed at the former public cemetery (Bürgerspitalsfriedhof) located in Amberg. Before separating the block it is necessary to exactly record and analyze the excavated object in order to prevent a loss of information about original location and individual parts. Hence, various open source software is presented for three-dimensional digitalization of the block itself as well as its interior components. The final process of documentation of the block and the spatial position of its individual parts is deduced from these results. In order to demonstrate the general feasibility of the presented methodology, a guideline for a free of charge 3D digitalization process is introduced. Besides, this work deals with conservation and restoration of the obtained individual components from the excavated block.
