Overview:

Abstract: This thesis deals with the design drawings that Dagobert Peche (1887-1923) executed for the Wiener Werkstätte between 1915 and 1923 and which formed the basis for their transformation into design objects. The collection consists of nearly 2700 works on paper and is now housed in the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. Although Peche´s designs have been inventoried together with thousands of designs by other artists working for the Wiener Werkstätte, they have not yet been examined either in terms of material technology or with regard to their object history. After each of Peche´s designs had been examined by the author, a catalogue of criteria was drawn up and, following this, an exemplary selection of designs was subjected to close scrutiny. In the process, characteristics and features that had previously been gone unnoticed, or had been observed only selectively or inaccurately, such as types of paper, drawing media, stamps, signatures, traces of the work process, damage, and previous restorations, were addressed.
The results of the various analyses were systematically recorded and catalogued, and earlier inaccuracies in the inventory were corrected. The results confirmed, among other things, the assumption that the design drawings not only provide valuable information regarding authenticity, dating, or stylistic characteristics of the executed objects, but also show previously unconsidered traces in the sense of circumstantial evidence that allow conclusions to be drawn about the production processes within the Wiener Werkstätte – from the sketch to the finished object. The resulting consequences for conservators are formulated in addition to suggestions for optimal storage of the designs as well as desiderata for future research at the end.
