| Abstract: | In this thesis, the history of conservation at the MAK - Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna was reviewed. Starting with the opening of the museum in 1864, the conservation and restoration of the collection was examined. The focus was on selected collection examples made of paper. Since conservation documentation only became established at the end of the 20th century, interviews with current and former conservators of the museum served as a central source in addition to the objects themselves. The results were supplemented by research in publications and in the museum´s archives. The history of conservation at the MAK can be divided into three phases. The first phase covers the period up to the end of historicism and is characterized by a high level of craftsmanship. The second phase marks the period from the post-war period to the mid-1970s. It is characterized by a lack of materials and the partial loss of precision craftsmanship. At the same time, it represents the beginning of academic education in the field of conservation-restoration. This transition is finally completed in the third and current phase. This thesis was written as part of the oral history research project at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna on the history of conservation in Austria. |
