Overview:

Abstract: The subject of the diploma thesis is a detached gothic mural fragment „Council of salvation and annunciation to Mary“ from the Catherine Chapel of the Pfannberg castle ruins in Styria (Austria). The mural is owned by the Universalmuseum Joanneum Graz and is part of the collection of the Alte Galerie. The mural dates from the 1290/1300 and was completely covered by overpaint to form a new surface for a second mural called „Coronation of the Virgin“ during a refurbishment of the chapel in 1423. In 1953 both of those murals, the original and the new one on top, were detached from the original wall surface using so called „strappo technique“ and then transferred onto a new supports made from hardboards.
A large part of the now visible damages is caused by the external influences of the past centuries. The first losses to the paint layers already occurred in 1423 and were further enhanced by the removal of the mural from the wall surface and the transfer onto a new substrate as part of the restauration in 1953.
Although the paint layers are stable for the most parts there are large areas of flaking paint as well as voids beneath, caused by tension differences between the animal glue residues applied during the transfer; furthermore, the coating has yellowed. To conserve the mural, the main goal is to establish a conservation method which will protect and preserve the paint layer and to develop a suitable presentation model for a display within a Museums environment. In consultation with the owners and the project leaders the developed concepts are implemented.
