Abstract: This bachelor´s thesis is concerned with the objective of determining the best
possible method for consolidating a damaged image carrier made of cardboard.
For this purpose, the material cardboard is first introduced in view of its raw materials as well as the manufacturing processes and its associated properties. Reference is made to the development for the use of cardboard as a picture support
and its application in painting. In view of degradation, possible and material-specific damage phenomena are explained. Furthermore, the consolidation process
is explained and the consolidation agents sturgeon glue, starch paste, Methocel™A4C and Plextol®B500 are presented and evaluated with regard to the
research question. The brush, syringe and spatula application methods will be
explained with regard to the fixatives. The use of wheat starch paste and spatula
proved to be the most suitable setting method.
