Abstract: The following diploma thesis documents the conservation and restoration of the detached mural ´´Marienkrönung, Votivbild für Hugo von Montfort´´. The mural is owned by the Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz and forms part of the collection of the Alte Galerie.
Nearly all damages seen today are a result of the detachment of the mural, which took place in 1953, the process of reattachment on a 4 mm thick fiberboard support. The lack of physical stability of the thin fiberboard caused deformation and bending during the handling of the strappo, putting the brittle paint layer at risk. A multitude of voids created by the reapplication of the mural on to the support increased the mural’s fragility. The widespread residues of the aged, yellowed animal glue, which was used during the removal, possess the potential for causing tension on the surface of the mural, leading to delamination and lifting of the paint layer. The mural’s readability has suffered from yellowing, ill-fitting fillings and retouching.
The central topics of this thesis were thus the consolidation of the paint layer, the stabilisation of the fibreboard support and the presentation of the weathered mural. Voids were filled with a mixture of lime and Primal AC33/SF016, lifted paint layers layed down using the latter. The removal of the animal glue residue was accomplished with ammonium bicarbonate and Marlipal® 1618/25 compresses. A lightweight steel grid was used to brace the fiberboard support. The integration of the fillings and lacunae as well as the reduction of the yellowing vastly improved the readability of the mural.
