Overview:

Abstract: The archive of the textile company Joh. Backhausen & Söhne contains 61 fabric sample books, created between 1861 and the 1950s. Within the scope of the diploma thesis the inventory was examined and a condition report was carried out. The fabric sample books with the catalogue numbers M6 and No. 21 were selected for conservation and restoration. They contain gouaches, tracing papers and cyanotypes, in addition to glued-in pieces of fabric.
In consideration of the complex combination of materials, a restoration concept was developed for the conservation of the two fabric sample books. The restoration included dry cleaning of the objects, tear mending, filling in areas of loss, re-forming and flattening of deformed pages and textiles, remounting of removed pieces of fabric, protection of the gouaches, the construction of a conservation binding and a concept for storage. Through the restoration a stabilization and preservation of the fabric sample books could be achieved. The project proved to be particularly challenging, since issues of book conservation, paper conservation and textile conservation had to be implemented simultaneously.
