The mural "Orpheus" was created a secco in 1948 by the Hamburg artist Willi Titze on the east wall of Studio 12 of the Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (NWDR) - the predecessor institution of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) - at Oberstraße 120 in Hamburg. The mural painting is a historical testimony to "Kunst am Bau", in the context of a sponsorship of formerly ostracized artists* from the region, and is one of the few immovable objects from this period in the NDR art collection. The long period of non-observance of the mural, combined with the technical characteristics of the mural painting and the lack of conservation measures, led to noticeable damage. These damages manifest themselves in the form of small colour flakes. In addition, the presentation of the mural is severely impaired by reworking in the background. The aim of this diploma thesis is the object investigation and the development of a conservation/ restoration concept for the long-term preservation of this work of art. On the basis of a sample area, the most important conservation and restoration measures were carried out in examples. This includes consolidation of of the painting layer (matt area), the removal of overpainting (PVAc) and the coloured filling.
