Overview:

Abstract: Subject of this diploma thesis is a cassette with ornate decorations in silver, gilded brass and
enamel from 1890. It holds the Viennese honorary citizenship document of Nikolaus Dumba,
an industrialist and patron of the arts of the late 19th century. The history of the object and the
ornaments are discussed and through technical and scientific analyses, the materials,
techniques and the condition of the object investigated. These investigations build the basis
for an extensive discussion of possible measures. Focus is the removal of corrosion,
consolidation and the fabrication of replications of missing enamel and brass elements. The
challenge lies especially in the combination of different organic and inorganic materials on
the object.
