Overview:

Abstract: The subject of this thesis is the investigation of the natural degradation and the conservation of polyurethane ester elastomers. The investigations are based on seven pair historical miner’s boots with elastic polyurethane ester outsoles which were produced in the late eigthies. Before their museification in 1993 they were used by the workers in the mines. The visual degradation phenomena on the soles are documented, categorized and analyzed by using microscopy and FTIR-spectroscopy. Additional information is been gained from the comparison of the visual degradation signs during natural and artificial aging. On the basis of the results conclusions are drawn about the influences and processes during natural aging. After extensive literature research test on stabalising and consolidating of the degraded polyurethane ester elastomers are performed. Methods using vacuum are tested and standardised tensile tests on consolidated test specimens are performed.
