Overview:

Abstract: A elaborate art technological investigation on a Late Gothic polychrome wood sculpture from the art collection of the Georg-August-University Göttingen is conducted in this thesis. This sculpture reveals a popular religious motif during the Late Gothic period - “Standing Virgin and Child”.
Even through researches of the surviving documents, the provenance of this object remained unclear. To clarify the original context of this sculpture, its paint and craft techniques are examined in detail. Both technical characteristics and choice of materials of this object are compared with other late gothic sculptures from different regions in Germany. Furthermore, the present study provides insights into the condition and various chronological changes of the “Standing Virgin and Child” and the recommended conservation treatments. In short, the result indicates that the possible origin of the “Standing Virgin and Child” might be Cologne but the exact workshop cannot be determinate.
