Overview:

Abstract: The diploma thesis at hand devotes itself to a 19th century, Chinese assemblage showing a theatre piece
with figures worked in paper, padded and lined by silk textiles which is glued on a wooden board covered
with painted paper. The object is framed and covered with a glasplate. The study contains an art-historical
investigation, scientific and technological analysis as well as a detection of the objects condition. Based
on this research a concept of conservation was developed. The treatment focuses on the consolidation on
adhesive of the fragile silk, therefore supports and glues used in textile conservation in a suitable way of
activation were tested. Furthermore, this thesis deals with finding a fitting cleaning method of the powdery
painting and consolidation of the paper.
