Overview:

Abstract: In August 2015 a canvas painting by Hans Pühringer (1987-1970) suffered severe structural damage and
aesthetic blemishes due to water damage. Shrinkage of the support caused extensive loss of bonding between
the support and the paint layers. White deposits of washed out components of the ground layer and
partially blanched varnish impaired the aesthetic qualities of the painting. The theoretical part of the thesis
concentrates on the artist Hans Pühringer‘s oeuvre and the origination of the portrait. Based on scientific
analyses, the paintings materials and condition are investigated and a concept for its conservation developed.
The practical work focuses on the stretching of the support in a climate tent, consolidation of the paint
layer and the treatment of the white deposits and blanching.
