Overview:

Abstract: This Master-Thesis focuses on a G Nordhausen-type wagon model, which is part of the collection of the Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein. The 1:10 model was made in the wagon-factory of Gotha in the 1950s and represents an extraordinary, detailed replica of an original Nordhausen. The object is made of steel, aluminum, plywood and veneer, all of which are heavily damaged because of inappropriate former storage conditions. For this reason, the primary objective of this thesis is to create a concept of measures and its implementation.
The thesis deals at first with a thorough technological investigation of the wagon, which is based on an examination with UV-radiation, infrared spectroscopy as well as a microscopic observation. The extensive aluminum corrosion, a mildew infestation and the distinctive deformation of the veneer are particular damage-phenomena. Various conservation and restoration options are being discussed and subsequently implemented with the intention to achieve a well-kept condition of use.
