Abstract: The Triangle Portal of the Erfurt Cathedral was erected in the first half of the 14th century as the new entrance to the also newly created nave. Since then, the east-facing Apostelportal serves both the clergy and the laity as entrance to the church. The west-facing Jungfrauenportal probably served for some time as the Gates of Paradise and thus during a funeral as access to the Marienfriedhof. From the top of the portal, visitors are being welcomed by a representation of the three Saints Boniface, Adolar and Eoban.
The sculptures of the Triangle present themselves today in various states of preservation and thus show also different levels of loss compensation. The polychromy of past centuries is in a very fragmentary state.
In the 19th century, the sculptures and architecture of the Triangle were in a bad condition. In this period, first extensive additions to the architecture and also on the sculptures of the portal had been executed. The overall condition of the sculptures on the Jungfrauenportal is worse than that of the sculptures of the Apostelportal. However, this is not attributable to the stone-variety, but solely on the exposure.
A further extensive restoration had then been carried out in the 1980s. The materials and methods correspond largely with the present approach to conservation. Because of the fact that 35 years have passed since these restorations, an investigation was envisaged with several issues. The main issue was the progression of deterioration. Therefore, an inventory and condition assessment was established with bespoke data sheets. The sculptures of the bishops had also been included. In addition, the mapping created in 1997 was to be extended to the sculptures of the three bishops at the top of the triangle.
The aim of this study was to develop a concept of measures for the restoration. The result of this study is the establishment of a real and urgent need for action on the two sculptures of the bishops Adolar and Boniface. On the sculptures of the virgins, the restoration of the 1980s is stable. In addition to repairs, a particular cleaning of the sculptures is recommended.
