Overview:

Abstract: The master thesis at hand deals with a medieval shield. In addition to dating the shield, it explores the provenance and the possible second use of it. The main part of the thesis is the examination of the technique and the processing of the various materials, like wood, animal tendons, textiles, leather, metal and several layers of paint. The materials used are identified and described in detail and compared with technological findings of other medieval shields. This is followed by the documentation of the state of preservation of the object, with a focus on the mutual interaction of the different materials and their effect on the object as a whole. Based on the examination of the technique and the causes for the damage, a concept to conserve and restore the shield in the context of its upcoming storage and exhibition is developed. The critical state of preservation of the shield makes it necessary to carry out conservation measures, which are explained in detail here.
