Overview:

Abstract: The subject of this thesis, an engraved bottle in pillar-moulding technique (ribbed bottle, German 'Rippenflasche'), belongs to a type of glass called à la faҫon de Venise. It is a symbol of wealth and beauty and therefore forms a part also of the Herzog-Alfred collection at the Veste Coburg. The bottle presents some specific characteristics. Both the polychrome painting of the ribs and the decorated cork have to be questioned regarding their originality and might well be later additions. The object displays various signs of use, ageing phenomena and damage. Taking into account the condition of the extant material, the stabilisation of two runners as well as the treatment of missing glass parts and the consolidation of unstable paint is highlighted and discussed. The preservation of the current condition also includes the awareness of the necessary storage conditions.
