Overview:

Abstract: The use of salt reduction poultices on Cottaer sandstone presents several challenges. It’s especially high percentage of fine pore, hydroscopic clay content limits the scope of applica-tion for standardized poulticing recipes and commercially available products.
This thesis is to evaluate opportunities to optimize the poulticing procedure for salt reduction in order to develop a controlled process which prevents the migration of salt ions further into the sandstone. To achieve this, investigations were carried out to fine-tune the composition of the mineral poulticing materials for the Cottaer sandstone.
