Abstract: Decontamination of microbiologically damaged objects represent an important area
in paper conservation. Current state of research has not yet discovered sufficient
methods of killing or inhibiting microbial attacks without simultaneously damaging
the paper support. Currently, industrial methods frequently use ionized oxygen for
air and water purification. This technique includes a non-contact and solvent-free
process, based on low-energy which does not require post-cleaning. These advantages
lead to an adaption into the conservation field.
Practical part of this thesis focused on ionized oxygen treatments of different papers
with varying aging degree, such as unaged and artificially aged between 24 hours
and 21 days. Additional other papers were artificially aged ater treatment to simulate
a long-term effect. Photo spectrometry analyses, measurement of paper acidity,
DP (Degree of polymerization), as well as pH value of surface and by cold extraction
were performed. Results of analyses revealed minimal change in color hue, pH value,
acidic paper content and DP.
While these changes can be considered rather insignificant, ionizing technology in
paper conservation represents no safe treatment option, since the ionization device
does not only produce oxygen ions, but also high concentration of Ozone. However,
required ion concentration for complete decontamination could not be achieved during
treatment. Further research is warranted to analyze and evaluate application
and effects of oxygen ionization on paper.
