Abstract: The stabilisation of weakened and damaged papers is traditionally carried out with water-based adhesives and thin Japanese papers. The amount of moisture introduced is problematic for the degraded objects for many reasons. Thin adhesive-coated papers enable a lower and reproducible moisture input and working time. They are produced manually and tested in many workshops. The chosen paper and adhesive depend on the object that needs to be treatend. This thesis examines how an industrially produced, methylcellulose-coated Japanese paper (2 g/m²) whose properties are largely unknown can be tested. The application should be suitable for
groundwood pulp papers with weakened structures and tears. The criteria of quality, ageing resistance, applicability, optical properties, adhesion, flexibility and retreatability
are tested and evaluated. Finally, considerations are made for systematic material testing from a restoration related point of view.
