Overview:

Abstract: As a part of this Masterthesis and in collaboration with the Stadtarchiv Kiel and the faculty of “Schriftgut, Buch und Grafik” of “Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst (HAWK)” a thorough and long-lasting conservative concept for the large and diverse inventory of the Stadtarchiv Kiel shall be developed. The inventory includes construction documents from 1860 onwards, but most of the documents date from 1890 to 1910. The total number of documents is 8.400. The used materials show high diversity and are strongly varying in quality. Through the industrial revolution at around 1840 and the increasing demand for prints and copies, as well as the rising correspondence fueled the development of various reproductive technics. Along with this came a high demand of new resources for paper, with the invention of groundwood pulp. The various technics are mirrored in the inventory of the Stadtarchiv Kiel.
Now the question arises: Which materials and reproductive technics are included in this his-torically evolved inventory and what does this mean concerning the long-term conservation of the documents. Thorough inquiry, investigation and synopsis of latest state of the art printing- and duplication technics, together with a sample of 40 documents, build the framework of the developed conservative concept, exposes typical patterns of damage and gives advice for future conservation.
