Abstract: This Bachelor thesis deals with the painting of the north-western wooden room of the half-timbered house „Rosenthal“ in Bad Langensalza (Thüringen). The aim of the work was to show the historically important features and to establish a concept of measures for the conservation and restoration treatment. To provide an appropriate concept, the inventory and the condition was investigated first. As a serious type of damage, a layer of soot was ascertained, which made it impossible for the observer to perceive the extant original substance.
The focus of the work was therefore the removal of a soot layer from a paint layer which is sensitive to moisture. To address this problem, several cleaning methods were tested. Depending on the type of damage, dry mechanical techniques like airbrasive with cork-flour as cleaning agent, the uncovering with a scalpel and also the chemical dissolution by putting on an emulsion from anionic and non-anionic tensides in a gel were applied successfully. In addition, a proposal for an aesthetic museum presentation was given.
