Abstract: In the beginning of this master thesis, detailed and thorough archival research has been made to get an overview of the construction and operating history of the castle and the Giant Hall in particular. The result is used to make an attempt at a hypothetical reconstruction the original design, which was carried out in cooperation with the museum’s expert, Andrea Jakob. This attempt concerned the origins of the room, the decoration with the elaborate plasterwork on the ceiling and the subsequent completion with the paintings in the individual image frames.
In the second part of the thesis, practical measures on the object are presented. First of all, extensive research concerning the condition of the room had to be made. The present version of the Giant Hall has been documented and recorded with the aid of drawings. They show the different types of damage, mainly of the wall and ceiling surfaces. Furthermore, previous restoration measures had to be recorded where possible and at the same time archival material had to be searched to get an over-view about materials and techniques used. In some areas of the hall, samples were taken in order to facilitate extensive scientific studies by an accredited laboratory. Evaluating the aforementioned work, an analysis of the damages and their causes was possible.
The next part of the thesis deals with the iconography of the scenes depicted. With regard to the clarification of the polychromy, stratigraphy had been applied. In addition, it was important to explain the currently existing visual and aesthetic split between ceiling and wall design.
As a result of these measures, a restoration concept was established. In this, different variants are theoretically discussed and the favored variant found practical use on a representative sample surface. Finally, there was the present and future use of the Giant Hall to look at.
