Overview:

Abstract: The existing work presents the stock and condition of the crucifix in Bad
Klosterlausnitz/Thuringia. The three‐dimensional image and the polychrome painting were
characterized. Using technological analysis, information about building technique of the threedimensional
artwork and also about the polychrome painting of the figure were discovered. A
mapping of the stock of paintings, which covered 15‐20% of the surface of the figure is included.
The mapping reflected also missing parts of wood, probably the original filler with a splint and
filler from earlier intervention of restoration.
The figure was painted three times, was discovered in progress of work. With help of specimen
of the polychrome painting and analysis via cross‐section polishes, it was possible to create
different try of reconstruction of different appearance of the figure. The stylistic placement and
the comparison with other crucifixes from this time shows, the crucifix belongs to the grand
Saxon great crosses. Whether the crucifix was part of the original equipment of the church in
Bad Klosterlausnitz or not, is not clearly to say but possible.
Many interventions of conservation and restoration were detected, but the dating of these was
not possible. After the consolidation from stock of polychrome painting at the waistcloth was
done, it was possible to give the crucifix, from point of conservation, in a stable condition, back
to the congregation of Bad Klosterlausnitz.
