Overview:

Abstract: The subject of this diploma thesis is a sword with a hand guard made of leather, dated around
the end of 16th century and made in Germany. The material combination of metal and leather
and an earlier restoration put restrictions on the restoration for consolidating and conserving
the object.
Initially, a description of the sword and its condition are given. This is based on a scientific
analysis of the metal and leather. Following this, the historical classification and the
investigation of the inventory are given. Additionally the techniques available for the
conservation and restoration of the sword are being identified and discussed. Finally, the
conception of the methods for the practical realization of the conservation of the sword is
being presented.
The aim of this thesis is to find methods for conserving and securing the substance of the object.
