| Abstract: | The subject of this thesis is a stained‐glass window which was found in 2009 in the basement of the Villa “Katharinenhof”, built in Hamburg Blankenese in 1836. The window had been badly damaged and neither its date nor its origins are known. The “Katharinenhof” will be in use again in 2012, when the return of this decorative indoor‐window, displayed within the flight of the staircase (as it had been originally), will set the final step of the refurbishment of the building. The window consists of a wooden framing and a special profile made of lead and iron, and a few pieces of Crown glass mainly painted in several layers of enamels, silver stain, Jean Cousin and grisaille. The extent of the loss of original glass‐pieces, their re‐assembling into an assumed design and the future function of the building raised many questions over the treatment of missing areas and the methodology of rebuilding a hitherto incomplete window. However, the discovery of two signatures of studios involved in the making of this window made it possible to elucidate its historical background. The information thus gained formed the basis for an ethically correct treatment of the missing parts and offered as such an unexpected opportunity for the impact this work of art can make in the future. All existing parts of the object as well as their condition have been documented in addition to the measures already carried out for the conservation of the glass. Advice on how to proceed during the forthcoming restoration of this work of art has also been added. Résumé Cette étude a pour sujet une peinture sur verre, qui a été trouvée gravement endommagée dans la cave de la villa „Katharinenhof“, édifiée en1836 à Hamburg Blankenese. Ni la date d’exécution de l’oeuvre ni son origine ne sont connues. Au terme des transformations entreprises dans la villa, le vitrail décoratif réintegrera en 2012 sa position d’origine dans l’alignement de l’escalier. |
