Overview:

Abstract: This work describes the conservation and restoration of a panel painting which has been
changed dramatically by water and dampness.
After the introductory information regarding the origin of the painting, several types of damage
and alteration are documented. Over time the influence of water and dampness caused
deformation of the panel and created cracks between the planks. Aging joint edges resulted in
the need for special construction and specific re‐joining methods. After examining the technology,
discussions about restoration techniques follow.
The main objectives of the conservation and restoration were the extensive consolidation of the
paint layers, the final retouching of the numerous areas of missing and convert paint. The aim
was to present the aesthetic and artistic values of the painting as a whole.
During the treatment various restoration phases were realized and documented.
