Overview:

Abstract: The diploma presented comprises the examination, conservation and restoration of a painting on
paper in possession of the German museum of wallpapers in Kassel. The item is registered under the
name of “Festive fighting act in presence of the imperator“, inventory number DTM 5002, and shows
the “Military trial at the palace of King Wu”. It is a hand‐painted, finely and explicitly performed
chinese drawing, dating from the first half of the 18th century.
Yet in China extensive conservational arrangements were performed. The item arrived Germany
probably at the beginning of the 20th century. But several damages resulted from the inappropriate
conditions whilst exhibitions and storage. Due to numerous bends, cracks, imperfections and
improper colour additions, an exhibition of the object was not possible anymore.
Examinations of the materials used, the painting techniques as well as the status of the item were
performed within the scope of the diploma. Emphases of the conservation and restoration were put
on the renewal of the backing and the retouching. As a result of the restoration the aesthetic overall
impression could be improved.
