Overview:

Abstract: This dissertation discusses BS 31, a silicon resin that has been used as a protective material for buildings
since the mid‐1960s. Five mid‐nineteenth century stained glass windows in Cologne Cathedral (sXXI ‐
sXXV) were treated with Methylsiliconeresin BS 31 during restoration work carried out between 1977
and 1982. Two of these panels were investigated, a literature search conducted and a questionnaire
sent to German and international conservators and conservation institutions to gain information about
the chemistry, properties and use of BS 31 and ideas for restoring stained glass panels treated with BS 31.
Materials testing and the necessity for treatment influenced the conservation concept, which was
carried out on a small area of one original panel.
