Overview:

Abstract: The epitaph of Elisabeth Schmid dating from the year 1575 is a partially polychrome alabaster
epitaph depicting typical post ‐ Reformation contents in a relief. It impresses the viewer mainly by its
quiet elegance (plain but elegant form). This was achieved through a combination of alabaster of
various colours contrasting with the partial polychromy consisting of the basic colours red, blue and
green as well as black and gold. The surface of the alabaster is covered by coating.
The epitaph was completed by three bits on top which are lost and by surrounding ornamental
painting on the plaster which is partially preserved. The right column was lost and was replaced by a
wooden replica. The most extensive phenomena of damage are the massive soilage by various
materials, losses of stone material as well as loss or modification of the partial polychromy.
