Overview:

Abstract: The work concerns itself with the protection of stained glass artwork in museum display cases from the
viewpoint of conservation.
In the first part, the different types of display case for the presentation of stained glass artwork are
described. Along with representing the make‐up, the general demands placed on display cases will also be
defined.
The second part concerns itself specifically with damaging influences, i.e. the effect of light, the damaging
influence of the room ambience and the air pollutants as well as theft and mechanical damage which
affects the items on display. Along with the description of the changes and damages, which arise as a
result of influences, different measures aimed at damage limitation will be discussed.
In the third part the display cases in two museums have their protective properties examined and judged,
and attempts to prescribe possible solutions for improvement are sought.
