Overview:

Abstract: The practical part of the thesis comprises the technological examination of two doors of the choir barrier area in the St. Nicolai Church, Stralsund, with special emphasis on art technological and conservational aspects. Based on this, a concept to conserve and restore the doors was developed and implemented on one door.
Both doors are composed of an oak wood framing. In the lower part of the framing plates with both-sided gothic paintings are inserted. The upper filling is formed by a forged ornamental fence. The multiple iconoclastic damages of the paintings gave reason to further analyse the damage pattern in the theoretical part of the thesis. For this purpose a catalogue of exemplary damages was generated, which identifies and illustrates possible technological approaches to conserve and restore the paintings.
