Abstract: The following dissertation is divided into a practical and a theoretical part. The practical part deals with the examination, conservation and restoration of a large wood panel painting (beginning 17th century), owned by the Altenburg Schloss- und Spielkartenmuseum (Inv. Nr. V 4889).
The theoretical part deals with the treatment of knots in wooden paint panels during the Middle Ages. The main focus is on the ways panel makers used to cut these knots out of the panel boards.
