Overview:

Abstract: The paintings collection of the animal- and landscape painter Philipp Peter Roos (1657 - 1706) from the
Gallery Old Masters in Kassel consists of eleven canvas paintings of varying formats. This thesis compares
all paintings in terms of the painting technology and puts a focus on the artist’s working methods including
the object history of the paintings at the Art Gallery Kassel. The present condition of these paintings was the
main reason for this Master Thesis. Numerous age - related damages from distinct deformations to strongly
yellowed varnishes, as well as changes caused by restauration treatments, such as relinings and coats on
the reverse are present. The conservation and restoration concept is based on the results of the
technological examination and the condition report and puts the main focus on the preservation of the
object. The general approach for the conservation treatment is the achievement of a representable condition
for each painting. The practical aspect for this thesis was the consolidation of the fragile tacking margins
and reduction of deformations in the canvas support, executed on one of the eleven paintings.
