Overview:

Abstract: The first part of this theses describes the research undertaken to develop a treatment methodology to conserve a baroque pulpit including a description of the wooden construction, a detailed condition survey and material analyses. One of the main causes of damage to the wooden construction is the large scale, active wood borer infestation (anobium punctatum), resulting in the weakening of the wooden construction and a high risk of further extensive losses. Tests and research results let to a detailed conservation plan. A representative damage area was selected and remedial treatment method applied. Those measures included securing loose parts of the wooden construction, veneers and carved elements. The surface was cleaned using a solvent gel and the wood consolidated with Degalan P28 in a solvent mixture. In addition a protective Regalrez 1126 coati ng was applied allowing future surface cleaning without reduction of the historic varnish and providing some protection against light fading.
