Overview:

Abstract: The present master thesis concerns mortar and plaster from the St. Mary’s Cathedral in Hildesheim. A few selected mortar samples from five different construction phases are examined in more detail in the context of the thesis. The first part of the paper deals with the methods of investigation. It explains the possibilities and limits of the different analytical methods.
In the second part of the master thesis the composition of the mortar samples is determined. The main focus is the determination of the binder and the mineralogical investigation of the aggregates. The classification of the mortar samples is made in the process to be able to assign them to the respective construction phases.
Finally, an attempt to determine the point of origin of the building materials in more detail is made. Another focus of this paper is the presentation of the characteristics of the mortar samples in a catalog.
