Overview:

Abstract: The analysis of synthetic pigments and their ability as retouching pigments in the conservation of paintings is the aim of the following paper. The most important aspect of this analysis will be the intention of becoming familiar with the subject of synthetic pigments in general and with the matching criteria and methods of examination. The results of these examinations will be the basis of further ones for gaining information about the properties of thirty selected synthetic pigments in terms of a retouch and also about their chemical composition. These aspects are of special importance for a conservator. At the end of this paper the research results of both fields will be compared to each other to be able to publish similarities and differences between them and to find possible reasons for that which could be used for the selection of synthetic pigments further on.
