Birgit Schmidt: Application of laser-technology to model systems of Central Asian wallpainting fragments Back

Abstract: Possibilities and limits of laser-cleaning of soot and polymer-coated paint layers have been evaluated on model samples mimicking ancient Central Asian wallpaintings. For this purpose, results obtained from original fragments from the “Ritterhöhle” (Asian Art Museum, Berlin, Germany) provided a guideline for the preparation of test samples. On the basis of different colour pigments and binding agents, test samples were produced and characteried by means of surface analytical techniques. The additional generation of a covering soot layer, the artifical weathering, and the application of a polyvinyl acetate dispersion (Caparol) to selected test samples allowed us to visualise the behaviour of different materials upon laser irradiation and enables an assessment of the applicability of the laser-cleaning technology to the original ancient fragments.
