Carsten Henselmann: Construction techniques and manufacturing methods of historic Egyptian furniture Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis is concerned with the construction techniques and manufacturing methods of historic Egyptian furniture of the Dynastic Period (around 3000-350 B.C.). The research is based on objects collected at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, the furniture from the tomb of architect Kha (Museo Egizi, Turin) as well as further depictions found in the literature. Tools used for their manufacture are identified and explained with the help of archaeological finds, wall paintings and tool marks, followed by a detailed technical description of individual pieces of furniture. On this basis, a categorisation of typical furniture construction is undertaken for the first time. This insight aims to further the understanding of construction methods and materials, and seeks to shed light on invisible construction parts, in order to provide vital information required during the conservation, stabilisation and display of damaged or frail objects.
