Overview:

Abstract: The sculpture “tree” (1967) from Pavlos consists of two uncoloured acrylic glass casings in the shape of a tree that are plugged into each other orthogonally. These casings contain constructions of colourful poster paper cut in strips. The work of art was severely damaged in 2006 and is not fit to be shown in exhibitions. In the diploma thesis at hand the original material, the working processes and the condition of the object were examined. The main focus is on the strongly damaged acrylic glass parts (polymethyl methacrylate = PMMA). Therefore different options of jamming fractures with double-faced adhesives tapes and adhesive films and filling cracks with dissolved synthetic resins were reviewed at material samples of cast PMMA in order to develop a conservation concept for the damaged casing of the tree.
