Abstract: The history of uncovering’s wall paintings shows how problematic this measures is and how special consideration is requireds from an ethical and technical viewpoint. A definition of uncovering provides an access into this subject. The history of restoration shows how popular, but at the same time controversial, the uncovering of wall paintings was and still is. Restoration ethics and considerations and the demands for uncovering form the foundation for this discussion. Preliminary examinations and possible problems which might occur are debated. The mechanical, physical and chemical uncovering methods shown, their mechanisms and their advantages and disadvantages, as well as some possibilities of combination should give an overall view of the proceedures used. Furthermore, possibilities for the supervision the quality of the uncovered surfaces are introduced, as well as possible pre or post uncovering measures.
