Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The collections of the Vorarlberger Landesmuseum in Bregenz includes 27 umbrellas and parasols, illustrating a broad spectrum of types and styles from the early 19th century to the 1950s. Normal use and the material mix result in characteristic damage patterns. After an in-depth examination of the objects it was possible to define and describe typical decay mechanism for all umbrellas and parasols. This paper discusses and explains the difficulty of restoring such textiles by using a selection of three representative objects. It also discusses different possibilities for proper storage and safe presentation.
