Abstract: A variety of cleaning sponges are increasingly used by conservators. Few is known about the influence of cleaning sponges on mural painting and their physical properties. The composition and applicability of selected sponges are discussed. Furthermore the thesis investigates cleaned surfaces in concern of left residues, soluble constituents and the effectiveness of the cleaning sponges. Based on the results of the comparitive study and empiric cleaning tests, an evaluative conclusion is given. It provides advices for using and outlines the pros and cons of the different sponges. Properties, effects and the specific qualification of the sponges are shown in a short schedular summery. This overview should support conservators in choosing the right cleaning sponge.
