Overview:

Abstract: The tower of the church of Bistriţa (RO) is one of the most important medieval buildings of Transylvania. The building material which consists of a fine-grained volcanic tuff is severely deteriorated and shows on the surface large cracks and scales. Preliminary scientifically examinations concerning the stone and its special situation on the object are fundamental for evaluation of circumstances of damage. They also serve as a foundation for the effectiveness of conservation treatments. On one hand an agent for reduction of hygric swelling and his effect to the stone is tested. Another part of the paper deals with different modifications of mineral and silica gel bounded injections mortars for the application on scales and cracks. The hygrical and mechanical properties of them are examined. Application of modified microcement-based injection mortars seems to be successful especially for closing large zones behind scales.
