Overview:

Abstract: The state and the development of damage of the medieval wallpaintings in the choir of St
Marien in Salzwedel, which were treated with synthetic resins as Polyvinylacetate and
Polyvinylalcohol, require a preservative intervention. Aim of the presented work is the
development of a concept for consevation and restoration. Basics are therefore the
knowledge of materials, technique and of reasons of damage at the paintings as well as
the consideration of material specifics and degradation of the applied polymers. By
means of experiments it was able to develop a method of reducing the blocking resins
and to re-establish the porous mineral structure of the wallpaintings.
