Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with an exemplary restoration of a representative
rescue oxygen apparatus for mines produced between 1904 and 1910 from the
collection of the Deutsche Bergbaumuseum Bochum. Besides talking about the
historical meaning of the apparatus, the thesis focuses on its function and
technology. One emphasis is the examination and removing of mould from the
leather components. Furthermore the state of the leather is determined and the
sealing of tears in the leather straps is discussed in a test. Afterwards the
stabilization of the apparatus’ rubber parts, which are degraded to different
degrees, is reviewed.
Concerning the collection of the museum, the climatically conditions of the
depot is examined. The thesis also discusses how one could transfer the
methods used to restore the Draeger-Rescue-Apparatus 1904/09 to the
remaining objects of the collection.
