Overview:

Abstract: A large-sized baroque oil on canvas by Simon Benedikt Faistenberger from the Tyrolea State Museum Ferdinadeumis seriously damaged due to the defective air conditioning in the painting storage. Primary losses incurred are cockling of the paint-layer and extensive opaque whitening of the varnish-layer, which strongly affects the perception of the image. Moreover, brown streaks exude from the painting’s verso. For the purpose of the conservation-restoration, extensive scientific work will be done to analyse the substance of the brown streaks and to calculate the extent of the whitening in the varnish-layer. Based on the results of the examination, the varnish-blanching can be treates. The brown streakts are only partially reversible. The phenomenon of “varnish-blanching” and its treatment for restoration is scrutinised and discussed.
