Ailke Karen Schröder: The „picture clock“ Bellagio - Investigations of the state of preservation and technique on a painting on textile support with integrated clock. Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Paintings with integrated clocks, so-called „picture clocks“, were very popular amongst the upper middle class during the nineteenth century. The picture clock “Bellagio” is the focus of this investigation. It consists of three principal compo-nents: a painting on textile support, a clock with several different chimes and a box frame. The origin and the relationship between the three components are con-sidered based on the investigation of the materials, techniques and the state of preservation as well as the chronological and regional classification. This is fol-lowed by a discussion of damage patterns typically found in paintings of picture clocks, a treatment proposal for the “Bellagio” picture clock, and a discussion regarding the future use and handling of the object.
