Overview:

Abstract: This paper documents the examination of wall hangings from the Gartrop Castle near Huenxe. These wall hangings originate from the second half of the 18th century and in their design imitating a Chinese style. They were removed from their original place in 1993 and were taken into storage. It presents a general overview of the art history of the chinoiseries and a detailed account of the Gartrop pieces. Recommandations for conservation and restoration are based upon technological examination and study of condition as well as a possible future exhibition of the chinoiseries in their original position. Suggestions for the reinstallation consider architectural and climate issues.
