Overview:

Abstract: The subject of this thesis is a lacquered cabinet of Saxonian origin dating from the first third of the 18th dentury now in the Arts and Crafts Museum (Iparmüvèszeti Museum) of Budapest. Attributed to Martin Schnell (1675-1740), court lacquer artist under August the String (1694-1733). The cabinet is a European masterpiece. The construction of the cabinet, the original lacquerwork including the 19th and 20th century renovations are studied and described in detail. Moreover, the cabinet is compared in style and technique with four other pieces of furniture representing the only still existing cabinets also attributed to Martin Schnell. A survey of the present state of research and of the cabinets is provided. Comparative research permitted determining the typical construction features of the furniture, the mountings and the lacquer-work, which partly confirms the attribution and partly refutes it. In future these characteristic features can be used as a basis for evaluating or classifying similar pieces.
